Client: Illawarra Catholic Club (ICC)
Location: Menai, New South Wales, Australia
Situation: With the assistance and master planning expertise of Crawford, the Club examined possibilities for expanding their existing facilities. When planning and financial feasibilities studies revealed that the existing site was constrained by its small size and lack of parking, the Club’s visionary Board of Directors, assisted by KPMG, polled their members, got their endorsement, and decided to find a new site for their new club facility.
Solution: Designing a new club from the ground up is a rare assignment in the licensed club industry. Often, the successful clubs grow by accretion, expanding onto available adjoining property when it becomes available; reconfiguring and remodeling their interior spaces when necessary; and other ad hoc or opportunistic moves. Presented with a “clean slate” to work with, Crawford set about rewriting the brief for the Club starting with department head interviews to build up a written document of the Club’s new needs. With this in hand the major functional spaces were laid out along a continuous circulation spine which served as an organizing principle and way-finding generator. New, bright, sunny and voluminous, Club Menai is the delight of all its members.
Quick Facts: At AU $10 million, the amount of building area achieved, quality of construction and the array facilities are remarkable.
Closing Arguments: We believe this building provides a positive contribution to the new Town Centre at Menai and is sympathetic to the character of Menai as a whole. The Club has become a welcomed element in the social fabric of the region providing recreational facilities for people to enjoy. In this way, Crawford Architects has assisted the ICC in its goal to be a good neighbor, created an asset for the Club, and it is a valuable contributor to the welfare and future of the community. |
