Client: Withheld
Location: Kansas City, Missouri, U.S.A.
Situation: Crawford Architects was selected to design a 2000 sq.ft. residential loft located in the River Market’s 5 Delaware building. While most people try to escape the urban environment for the weekend, these owners desired an urban loft as a weekend escape from their primary Kansas country home occupied during the week. The client wanted to break the mold of typical loft design and make their space more interesting through materials and angled walls, and so needed an efficiently designed space both open and flowing allowing for variety, flexibility and privacy.
Solution: A feature wall clad in fabric traverses the space at an irregular angle, separating the master suite from living spaces while simultaneously providing acoustical absorption to counter harder surfaces. Some of the fabric panels are also operable providing access to storage, mechanical and closet spaces.
For flow of space and flexibility, the private spaces of the bedrooms are separated by glass and wood operable doors. The translucent glass doors allow for the sharing of light without compromising privacy, while the rotating mangaris wood doors to the master bedroom allow the living area to flow into the master bedroom when more living space is desired for entertaining. Kitchen cabinets from IKEA are blended seamlessly into custom elements such as the center work island set on castors for easy mobility.
Quick Facts: A feature element of cast stone, set in a stainless steel frame and hung like a piece of art, helps animate the large open space of the living area.
Closing Arguments: Clear organization and the flexibility of the space create a sense of openness that can easily be lost in an urban loft of this size. |
