Location: Edwardsville, Kansas, U.S.A.
Situation: Crawford Architects was selected to assist a development team in master planning a prime 500 acre site immediately south of the Kansas Speedway. The developer landed several key tenants for the site including the 1,000 foot Kansas Landmark Tower, and Ski-Trac, an indoor snow skiing facility. The flexibility of the master plan will allow it to evolve as market conditions dictate, be used to secure financing, as well as be used as a promotional tool to lure additional tenants as required.
Solution: As the Kansas City regional area is not well-endowed with a highly usable natural setting, this development is being designed to promote healthy living. An underlying current of outdoor activity-oriented programming is at the foundation of the development. We have devised a town center concept that is anchored at each end by the Kansas Landmark Tower and Ski-Trac facility respectively. The distance as well as the lifestyle experience between the major anchors has been closely studied such that regional visitors park their car and leave it, walking comfortably between attractions. Space has been allocated for a future ‘people mover’ that would link all the Wyandotte County attractions together. For local residents, the remaining site includes a variety of housing types and densities, ensuring not only affordable housing for workers, but high-end and amenity-rich units for high rollers; all linked together by walking and biking trails.
Quick Facts: This new village includes 800,000 s.f. of lifestyle-oriented retail, a national tourist draw with the Kansas Landmark Tower, two hotels with business conference center, indoor ski hill, indoor/outdoor mini-motor sport facility, regional soccer complex, indoor multi-purpose athletic facility, and over 2,000 residential units supported by convenience retail among other amenities.
Closing Arguments: This project builds off and will enhance the already wildly successful Kansas Speedway development area in Wyandotte County. Kudos to Kansas! |
