Client: Incheon City
Location: Incheon, South Korea
Situation: Crawford Architects, in association with KMD San Francisco and Heerim Architects in South Korea, was invited to participate in a short-listed design competition for a new 7,500 seat arena in a green-belt site fronting one of Incheon’s largest urban parks.
Solution: With a dense urban setting on three sides of the site and important parklands along the eastern end of the site, it was clear to us that the arena must be woven into the urban fabric. This allowed additional open recreational and program elements to front the existing parklands. The shape of the arena is a direct reflection of the competing site influences. The design is much softer facing the park, and more rigid facing the urban environment. Additionally, the arena roof is lower towards the park, and higher towards the city’s high rise structures. Natural earthen berms step up on the park side to further conceal the arena massing from the surface. Finally, the horseshoe seating bowl configuration is not only ideal for a primarily entertainment-oriented facility, but the open end of the bowl looks out to the parkland.
Quick Facts: In addition to the arena, the Incheon City government’s brief also included a community center component comprised of a gymnasium, swimming pool, theaters, conference center, and underground car parking for 550 cars. |
