Hunter Valley House

Client:   Simon & Whitlam

Location:   Hunter Valley, New South Wales, Australia

Situation:   Nestled at the base of the Brokenback Ranges of New South Wales deep in the wine producing region of the Upper Hunter Valley, this house is designed to accommodate two families and their consuming interest in wine.

Solution:   With long views to the north over the vineyards of the Hunter, the design enabled each family to enjoy the benefits of communal living during the day, but with the ability to retreat to privacy of their own sleeping quarters at night.

With a centrally located living/dining/kitchen/cellar and loft area, each family has its own bedroom suite in the form of a separate building comprising three bedrooms and a bathroom. The bedroom suite is linked to the central living area by a covered veranda.

Each building is naturally ventilated with the main living quarters having a prominent ‘roll-over’ ridge vent designed to promote air flow through the building.

Quick Facts:   An AU $450,000 project. The complex is constructed in simple materials including concrete block lower walls, natural galvanized corrugated iron walling and roofing and polished concrete flooring.

Closing Arguments:   The simple building form and natural finish are reminiscent of early Australian homesteads, and the buildings sit comfortably within their landscape, with minimum disruption to site and surrounds.
