Client: University of Northern Iowa
Location: Cedar Falls, Iowa, U.S.A.
Situation: The University wanted a first-class arena and recruiting complex that would build support for several athletic programs as well as build campus and community pride. Crawford teamed up with Herbert Lewis Kruse Blunck to design a new 6,000 seat multi-purpose arena and 59,000 s.f. Human Performance Center. The HPC is one of only a handful of on-campus integrated sports psychology and physiology facilities with teaching and out-patient services. The arena program includes men’s and women’s basketball, women’s volleyball, men’s wrestling, coaches' offices, and Hall of Fame.
Solution: The opportunity to link the new arena with the existing UNI-Dome was too great to pass up given that the combined floor areas allow the complex to attract bigger exhibitions and shows, and therefore greater revenue opportunities as well as shared back of house opportunities. We also decided to separate the HPC from the arena and use the new HPC to better integrate their existing Wellness and Recreation Center with the UNI-Dome on the opposite side of the arena.
Quick Facts: Home field advantage is everything, and to that end we created a steep pit to ensure the visiting team remembers where they are. A $US 25 million project.
Closing Arguments: Universities afraid to update their athletic facilities take note: why not apply academia to a case study of integrating a revenue-generating sports facility with learning & cultural facilities? UNI is at the forefront of this emerging trend. |
