Client: Jacobsen Venue Management and Bovis Lend Lease.
Location: Auckland, New Zealand
Date Completed: Spring of 2007
Situation: Our consortium was invited back to Auckland by the City Council after initially losing the competition to develop this project. The “winning” consortium promised more than they could deliver, and we accepted the challenge posed.
Solution: We have worked closely on two fronts, with Auckland City Council and the indigenous Maori, Ngati Whatua o Orakei, to ensure the design and delivery of a landmark building that meets expectations for the site and the community. The design solution has a distinct ‘Auckland’ look and feel.
The iconic roof promotes instant recognition and brand legibility as it gestures to the Auckland CBD skyscrapers.
The arena is wrapped on all four sides by three different vertical planes that respond to each of the distinct neighbors including Auckland’s sea port and passenger rail line to the north, the CBD to the west, heritage train station to the south, and lower scaled commercial and residential to the east and southeast.
Quick Facts: Heralded as New Zealand’s first major public-private-partnership deal, this new 12,000 seat multi-functional arena is also Auckland’s first state-of-the-art indoor venue hosting events ranging from entertainment acts to gymnastics, basketball, netball and international ice hockey. The building opened in the spring of 2007.
Closing Arguments: Vector Arena was nominated for International Arena of the year in 2008 by the CIC Pollstar Awards. |
