Client: Mr. & Mrs. G. Cousins
Location: Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Situation: This house occupies a very steep, south facing site with spectacular views overlooking one of Sydney’s premier surfing beaches.
Solution: We pulled the program of the house apart and reorganized it into three separate pavilions, each linked to the other by covered stairways that step down the hillside to the beach. The benefit of this approach is that each pavilion is able to overlook the roof of the one below while permitting sunlight to penetrate the interior spaces that back onto the hillside.
An external covered inclinator connects each level to the garages located on Whale Beach Road. Pedestrian access within the building(s) is via the internal stairs which have a number of different configurations to add interest and variety.
Quick Facts: An AU $1.3 million project.
Closing Arguments: The lightweight timber framed construction minimized physical damage to what is a sensitive and difficult building site and in addition simplified the overall building process by eliminating the need for heavy load bearing cast-in-place or masonry construction. |
