Client: Withheld
Location: Sydney, New South Wales, Australia
Situation: The Greenwich House was designed and constructed on the bones of the original single storey dwelling that occupied a significant site in the Sydney suburb of Greenwich. In order to maximize views and avoid having to relocate the house further down the hill to comply with current lot setbacks, the sandstone footings of the original home had to be incorporated into the new dwelling.
Solution: Extensive use of steel framing permitted much of the house to be prefabricated off-site and enabled the main framing and roof to be completed in five days. The roll-over roof was utilized to keep the ridge heights within the height limits while fitting an additional floor into the available space. Internally, the major living areas open onto a semi-enclosed glazed verandah that overlooks the harbor to the city beyond. Adjustable glass and louvers permit control of light, view and ventilation as desired.
Quick Facts: Construction time was significantly reduced compared to typical load bearing systems.
