Client: Crawford Architects
Location: Culburra, New South Wales, Australia
Situation: Crawford came across a lifestyle opportunity on a fragile, sand dune beachfront location within that magical 2-3 hours drive of Sydney.
Solution: Go for it! By using a sensitive palette of materials and colours, these three homes have been designed to appear as if they were tossed up on the beach like a jumble of driftwood. Clad in western red cedar, which has been allowed to weather naturally, each house has extensive outdoor living spaces framed with hundred year old wharf timbers from Pyrmont (Sydney). Within the wharf timber frames, sliding permeable screens adjust for privacy from our neighbours and for protection from the often strong, salt laden sea breezes.
Each of the homes was designed to incorporate the individual requirements of the owner, yet form a cohesive communal grouping by using similar materials, forms, and finishes. Designed and built as a group, issues such as privacy and overshadowing were avoided as well as economies of scale were afforded during construction.
Quick Facts: Salvaged wharf materials add interest, visual cohesion and a sense of permanence to the houses.
Closing Arguments: No gutters, no paint, no garden, equals no maintenance which is the perfect recipe for holiday house living. |
