Client: Jacobsen Venue Management / Auckland City Council
Location: Auckland, New Zealand
Date Completed: Spring of 2007
Situation:
Crawford Architects was the architect for the Jacobsen / Bovis Lend
Lease consortium and one of three final competitors in the design of a
10,000-seat sports and entertainment venue, Auckland Arena.
Prior to the design and construction of this building, Auckland did not have a
multi-purpose entertainment/sporting facility of any significance and hence was
unable to hold events of international stature. The completion of this building
has enabled Auckland to be included as an international destination for
entertainment and sporting events.
Solution: Our arena design concept
began by exploring the idea of creating a unique building while satisfying the
functional design brief. It is visually dynamic, promises excitement for the
visitor, and contributes to the City’s inventory of memorable buildings. The
solution was similar to all arenas dictated by the brief requirements of event
types, seating capacity and sightlines. Beyond that the aim was to create a
readily recognizable iconic building.
This was achieved by what appears as a complex curved roof form which is, in
fact, two simple flat planes connected by a third simple roof.
