To design a new indoor sports and entertainment arena for New Zealand’s largest city capable of hosting a variety of sporting and entertainment events.
Vector Arena is New Zealand’s first major public-private-partnership deal. This new 12,000 seat multi-functional arena is also Auckland’s first state-of-the-art indoor venue hosting events ranging from entertainment acts to gymnastics, basketball, netball and international ice hockey. Crawford worked closely on two fronts, with Auckland City Council and the indigenous Maori, Ngati Whatua o Orakei, to ensure the design and delivery of a landmark building that meets expectations for the site and the community.
The design solution has a distinct ‘Auckland’ look and feel. The iconic roof promotes instant recognition and brand legibility. The arena was nominated by Pollstar for the 2008 International Arena of the year.
