As part of a multi-disciplinary team we were invited to participate in a limited competition to create a new convention center component to Melbourne’s existing exhibition center. Previously, the meeting facilities associated with conventions were sited at a venue across the river.
The site on the river was constrained, requiring the program to be vertically stacked. This in return required complex servicing and public circulation constraints that had to be successfully overcome. The new plenary hall will be complemented with a new ballroom and several suites of meeting rooms, along with all the attendant service facilities necessary to operate such a complex and comprehensive building.
The expansion will permit Melbourne to compete internationally for large events requiring plenary settings for up to 5,000 delegates.
